POSITION SUMMARY
- This is a skilled position that performs maintenance, repairs, and construction to asphalt and concrete streets, curbs and gutters, sidewalks, guardrails, and storm drainage structures. An employee within this position is responsible for operating and maintaining a variety of medium and heavy-duty vehicles, construction equipment, and hand tools. Other functions and responsibilities may include the following:
- Performing heavy manual labor related to street maintenance, repair, and construction tasks including: patching asphalt, forming and finishing concrete, repairing manholes and inlets, sweeping streets, patching potholes, crack filling, repairing guardrail, salting, and plowing snow.
- Measuring dimensions, calculates area and volume, and estimates quantities.
- Operating street maintenance equipment including, but not limited to: end loaders, backhoes, asphalt rollers, street sweepers, power tampers, jackhammers, cement mixers, concrete saws, air compressors, and air tools. Performing operator level maintenance to vehicles and equipment while Identifying and reporting mechanical problems requiring repairs.
- Operating a street sweeper and performing operator level maintenance of the sweeper.
- Performing snow plowing and salting of streets, parking lots, and alleys. Responsible for mandatory assignment to snow shift duties during winter operations.
- Participating in storm watch prior to rain events and reports to work when needed to maintain safe conditions on City streets during rain events.
- Responding to emergency work situations 24/7 including emergency call-ins, night, weekend, holiday, and all planned or unplanned operations necessary.
- Performing related duties and manual labor as assigned including, but not limited to: pick up and disposal of dead animals, litter pickup, maintenance and repair of streetscape features (paver bricks, trash receptacles, benches, tree grates, and bollards), correction of sidewalk trip hazards, filling sandbags, and deployment of message boards.
- Communicating effectively, providing excellent customer service, and promoting and maintaining positive community relations.
QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum one year experience in the operation and maintenance of light duty vehicles and equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience. A Valid driver’s license is required, with a minimum of a Class B-CDL with Air Brake and Tanker Endorsement. Class A-CDL will be required within one year of hire.
