2026 Highlights:

June 2026 – Southwest Branch Golf Outing at Silver Lake Country Club:

Thank you to all who attended our 2026 SW Branch Golf Outing! The event was held on June 3 this year, and we had just over 140 attendees. With far warmer and sunnier weather than last year, we hope that everyone enjoyed the course and had opportunities to catch up and network with fellow APWA folks. Proceeds from the event went to scholarships for students in the SW Branch area interested in the public works and construction-related fields. The SW Branch hopes to see you at next year’s golf outing and wishes you a great summer ahead.

May 2026 – Illinois Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4) Permitting and Implementation:

Thank you to Dan Bounds, P.E., D. WRE with Baxter & Woodman, Inc. for informing on the recent requirements regarding the new Illinois MS4 permit. Dan discussed the requirements including items such as the requirement to update the Stormwater Management Program with new requirements and being implementation within 12 months. Additional points of discussion included public education, outreach, involvement & participation, illicit discharge detection & elimination, construction site storm water runoff control, post-construction stormwater management, pollution prevention for municipal operations, and additional tracking for the new annual reportion requirements.

April 2026 – Environmental Risk Management for Municipal Projects – From Acquisition to Construction:

Thank you to Brian Mihelich with True North Consultants, Inc. for providing perspective on the needs and considerations regarding environmental factors involved in municipal project design and planning. Brian took a practical look at environmental risk management from property acquisition through construction. Topics included PESA/PSI, Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, Illinois EPA SRP and LUST programs, soil management options including CCDD and Subtitle D, and demolition and renovation requirements relating to asbestos, lead-based paint, and hazardous materials, and Brian reviewed real-world case studies involving these various topics.

March 2026 – Public Works Social at Flipside Brewing:

Thank you to those who joined us in March for an evening of networking and catching up to ring in the start of Spring. The SW Branch saw a couple new faces at this gathering, with engaging conversation and good appetizers. Flipside Brewing was a great space, and we encourage members passing through the I-80 area to stop by and check it out for themselves! Thanks to the SW Branch YP Committee for organizing the outing for the membership.
